Alcohol Abuse Role Play

Please respond as a New Hope Counselor to this chatter's comments.  Then use the "A-B-C's of New Hope Counseling Checklist" and "Responses to Avoid in New Hope Counseling" to evaluate each of your responses.  Identify each type of response (e.g., "reflection," "open question," "advice," etc.).

Chatter:  I'm 22 years old, my internship is not working out well, I have problems at work, and I am drinking heavily.  I want to quit the drinking.

Chatter:  Today I left work, saying I was sick.  I'm not really sick, but I just wanted to get away from work.  I am a heavy drinker (right now also, sorry) and I know I must quit, but I tried before, but couldn't do that.

Chatter:  As I'm talking to you I am drinking my 1st beer since I came home, so I haven't had enough to really affect me yet.

Chatter:  I put it aside.  It's OK not to drink while we talk.

Chatter:  I would like to do a better job of controlling my drinking.  One year ago I tried to stop.  I was studying in Amsterdam, and I knew I was ruining my studies.  Later I drank almost nothing for a few months, but after that I began to drink again.  So I am back to where I started.  I don't trust AA.  So, I am scared to go there.  To be honest, I am a little bit ashamed that I must drink to forget my problems.

Chatter:  A father of a friend of mine died through drinking.  I don't want that to happen to me.  I mean, I am 22, that's rather young to die I think.

Chatter:  I read the Bible, and try to do good thinks, like giving to the poor, etc., but I don't go to church.  When I pray it seems to be just a one-way thing.  When I was not drinking I could feel satisfied when I did something like reading the Bible.  But now I have no feelings with that.  It just it feels like it only comes from me, and that I get nothing back.

Chatter:  If I stopped drinking, my relationship with God might change.  I don't know.

Chatter:  I will have a lot to think about this week.. :-) I'll make a list of things that can make me go back drinking and find out ways to communicate better with God. Unfortunately I must quit in a few minutes. It was very good to talk to you.  Thanks for that.
