New Hope Basic Training, Class 2 Outline

William Gaultiere, Ph.D.

Executive Director of the New Hope Crisis Counseling Center

Dr. Bill presents the process and basic techniques of how we respond to counseling needs.  You might think that to be Christ’s Ambassador you need to give Biblical advice or reassure people that God will take care of them.  But neither are what we do!  We don’t try to fix people; we care for them, showing them the care that we’ve received from God and the Body of Christ.  We like to say, “New Hope Counseling is as easy as A-B-C” because anyone with a caring heart can do this.  The most important criteria is already in place: You volunteered to care for hurting people in Jesus’ name. (As Pastor Jim Kok says, “90% of helping is just showing up!”)  This class teaches you how to put this caring into practice.  This is how friends and family ought to (but usually don’t!) respond to one another’s problems.  You can learn these basic skills!  You must learn these techniques!  Later, your New Hope Mentor will show you how to use these A-B-C’s of New Hope Counseling in live role plays.
