New Hope Basic Training Programs
There are three ways that prospective New Hope Counselors can complete their training in order to help hurting people via our hotlines (714-NEW-HOPE & 714-NEW-TEEN) or private chat rooms (NewHopeNow.org & Teenline.org): Local Training Program, Online Training Program, or Satellite Training Program. Local Training Program
Four times per year at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, CA we offer a series of training classes. New Hope's winter, spring, and fall classes are weekly for six weeks. New Hope's summer class is an intensive done over four consecutive afternoons. Training includes live instruction (by Pastor Jim Kok, William Gaultiere, Ph.D., or Louise Dunn, M.A.), sharing your personal story in a small group, and counseling role-play practice with a mentor. In addition trainees schedule to meet with New Hope staff and/or mentors for orientation and supervised counseling for their service on the hotline and/or in the chat room.

Online Training Program
On a private section of the New Hope website we train volunteers throughout the year from their home computers, using our private New Hope Counselor website. Training includes video taped classes (mostly from the above list), reading, proficiency exams, phone conversations, counseling role-play practice using Instant Messenger, and supervised counseling. Trainees progress at their own pace, but are expected to complete their training in about six to eight weeks.
Satellite Training Program
For people who live near the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, CA, but who need to follow an individualized schedule for their training, we offer a flexible training program that combines New Hope's local and online training programs. Trainees take their classes (mostly from the above list) independently via website (recommended), DVD, or VHS. In addition they schedule times to meet in person with New Hope staff and/or mentors for orientation, counseling role-play practice, and supervised counseling.
