If you're taking this class by CE Notes or tape then complete this exam and turn it into Sheila on T-5 or at SheilaS@CrystalCathedal.org in order to receive credit.

1.   Good counselors don't need to learn from callers/chatters, the callers/chatters need to learn from them F
2.  Anxiety is emotional, not physical. F
3. Anxiety is a troubling "primary emotion." F
4.     People with anxiety disorders are usually emotionally weak. F
5.   Stress is the main reason for anxiety problems. F
6. It's not good to say to an anxious person, "It seems you feel afraid."   F

7.       Anxiety problems develop because of the tension between __________ and ____________________.

8.       Offer three sample "affirming" feelings messages that you could verbalize to an anxious caller/chatter:

(1)   ___________________________________________

(2)   ___________________________________________

(3)   ___________________________________________

9.       Offer three sample "accepting" bodily symptom messages (focused on facts that have been shared with you) that you could verbalize to an anxious caller/chatter.

(1)   ___________________________________________

(2)   ___________________________________________

(3)   ___________________________________________

10. Respond to each of the following anxious caller/chatter comments with an appropriate New Hope Counselor response.  Focus responses on reflecting feelings, summarizing main points, using open-ended questions to invite the caller/chatter to develop a positive action step, and reinforcing helpful steps.

Chatter:  I've been sick a lot during the last year, now I have mono.  The doctor is worried because it seems like my immune system is down.  She has taken tests for other things, and now I am scared.

Counselor:

Chatter:  Every thing was starting to go really good in my life for the first time in 12 years, but now I have all these doubts because of these tests. I have this worry and I just don't know how to deal with it...I know that all I can do is wait...but it isn't easy.  I pray to God and leave it in His hands, but I never can just let go of the anxiety.  Because of all of these worries, I have a hard time sleeping.

Counselor:

Chatter:  I just keep asking God to please let these tests be okay.   I don't know how I would deal with it otherwise.

Counselor:

Chatter:  To be honest....I don't pray very often....I believe in God and Jesus and I know that I have made it through life with His help, but like a lot of people, when things like this happen then you start calling on God.

Counselor:

Chatter:  I know that God is the only one that can help me.

Counselor:

Chatter:  Maybe I should ask God to help me handle waiting for these results.

Counselor:

Chatter:  I might be worrying for nothing.  It could be that I am run down and trying to do too much...being a single parent, working, and being on the board of directors to a group that I belong to.

Counselor:

Chatter:  I know God would be there to help me with this, but I am scared about how I would deal with bad test results.......but in the same respect maybe I shouldn't even worry unless they do come back bad.

Counselor:

Chatter:  Thank you for listening to me....I just needed someone to talk to because I haven't talked to anyone else except my mother about these tests.
