Would
you save the life of a person if you could? If someone wanted
to kill himself would you try to stop him? Of course, you
would! And the person you helped would be eternally grateful
and so would you.
You can become a life-saving hero right now by volunteering
as New Hope Crisis Counselor from your home computer or by
making a tax-deductible
donation to New Hope.
On September 15, 1968, Dr. Robert H. and Arvella Schuller founded
the New Hope Crisis Counseling Center at the Crystal Cathedral's
Tower of Hope, America's first 24-hour live church sponsored suicide
and crisis prevention hotline. Back then, before the Crystal Cathedral
was built or the Hour of Power went on television, Dr.
and Mrs. Schuller and other pastors at the church took turns handling
crisis phone calls from church members and the public in general.
Arvella Schuller was out doing her usual errands one day when
the distraught woman she had been talking to tried to reach her
on the phone. When there was no answer (that was before answering
machines and voice mail were used), the woman committed suicide.
That's how the Schullers realized the need for a 24-hour crisis
prevention phone line. The Schullers, along with Dr. Raymond Beckering
and Dr. Alan Walker, a minister who had started a similar program
in Australia, founded New Hope.
Today, 350 specially trained New Hope volunteers, supervised
by a professional staff, operate the original 24-hour crisis prevention
telephone line - 714-NEW-HOPE - and the just for teens (staffed
by teen volunteers) - 714-NEW-TEEN. The 24-hour daily service
is also available on the Internet at www.NewHopeNow.org
and www.teenline.org with volunteers serving from
their home computers.
New Hope has...
- Saved over 14,000 lives, that's more than one suicide prevented
daily!
- Answered 1,250,000 phone calls to 714-NEW-HOPE and received
over 600,000 visitors to www.NewHopeNow.org.
- 250 specially trained phone counselors (including 20 teenagers)
combine to volunteer over 25,000 hours a year.
-
85 New Hope Online volunteers serve from their
home computers in cities across America and around the world
like Hong Kong, Singapore, London, Baylys Beach (New Zealand),
Toronto, Chicago, Gainsville, Tucson, and, of course, Garden
Grove, CA!
Wherever you live, you too can be a part of the Crystal Cathedral's
